Your Site
In The News
It has been
our experience that sites containing press areas with simple,
text news articles do very well with the search engines. We surmise
there are two reasons for this: one, the pages are very text-heavy
giving the search engines the content they crave and two, the
information is generally "fresh" and is viewed as information
content as opposed to sales content.
You can go
one better, however, with the addition of syndicating your news
content with an RSS news feed. The news feed is then submitted
to various online news sources. These sources, such as Moreover.com,
distribute this information to partner sites, which include some
of the major search engines such as Google as well as some websites
that wish to show industry-specific news at their site.
It should
be understood, however, that the content of the press release
should be newsworthy, not a rehash of old sales literature. The
news feed only picks up the headline of the article and a brief
description (both of which are included in the channel of the
feed), the link would then take the viewer directly to the press
release page at your website.
If you are
HTML savvy, you can setup a news feed yourself with instructions
that can be found on the Internet. Make no mistake, Dreamweaver,
FrontPage and other WYSIWYG HTML editors are not needed for this
feed - you must work in a text document and enter XML code. If
coding a document gives you goose bumps, then you'll want to hire
someone to do it for you. There are several things involved:
- There is
the initial setup of the news feed itself, a fairly simple matter
for a professional.
- Then there
is the maintenance of the news feed - you must update the feed
whenever a new press release is added to your site. Old news
is no news.
- Then, naturally,
the press release must be uploaded to your site. This can be
done by you, your designer or the professional who is setting
up and maintaining the news feed for you.
- You may
also have a JavaScript version of your feed created to allow
other webmasters to syndicate your content on your site, if
you so choose.
